Bermondsey revisited (again)

We are approaching the 25th anniversary of the Bermondsey by-election.

To commemorate the event, Jonathan Derbyshire has written fair-minded article, which appeared in last week's Time Out.

The author is the son of one of my Lib Dem colleagues on Watford Borough Council (although I gather he is not himself a Lib Dem).

The important thing about this is that it makes the point that it was Old Labour and John O'Grady who were behind the vilification of Peter Tatchell, not Simon Hughes. The Liberal contribution - and I think it probably was unintentional - was the one Focus paragraph saying "it's a straight choice". Labour seem to have forgotten the true history of this, and we regularly see diatribes attributing the homophobic attacks on Tatchell. not to O'Grady and Tatchell's Labour enemies, but to Hughes and the Liberals.

That is a brilliant article, and ties up all the different threads that we all know into one place in a fair and impartial way.

Thanks for linking to it. IT won't, of course, put the ghost to rest fully, but it may help shut some loons up.
